In order to be able to follow defined routes and act autonomously, these systems must be able to orient themselves in the environment. This is usually done by using the well-known <strong>GPS<\/strong>\/Global Position System, which, however, reaches its limits without a view of the sky, e.g. in buildings. The innovative <strong>IPS<\/strong> technology has the potential to change this.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The technology is being developed at the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dlr.de\/os\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DLR Institute of Optical Sensor Systems<\/a><\/strong> (DLR-OS), which was awarded the Berlin\/Brandenburg Innovation Prize for it at the end of 2018. The new approach combines a variety of technologies and sensors in one device, i.e. each part contributes its strengths and minimises the weaknesses of the others. Orientation is provided by visual <a rel=\"popover\" data-title=\"sensor technology\" data-post-id=\"5963\" class=\"sr-glossary-link\" aria-label=\"Sensor technology\" href=\"https:\/\/security-robotics.de\/en\/glossary\/sensor-technology\">sensor technology<\/a>, for example using stereo cameras, thermal cameras and inertial measurement systems. Obstacles such as vibrations, shaking, glare, reflections, backlighting, etc. are filtered through the <a rel=\"popover\" data-title=\"sensor fusion\" data-post-id=\"5965\" class=\"sr-glossary-link\" aria-label=\"Sensor fusion\" href=\"https:\/\/security-robotics.de\/en\/glossary\/sensor-fusion\">sensor fusion<\/a> and do not reduce the measurement accuracy of the system.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>IPS<\/strong> Navigation can integrate <strong>GPS<\/strong> and <strong>WiFi<\/strong>, but also works without their presence and, this is a great advantage, does not require any further room and environment data in advance.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to a compact handheld version, there are also <strong>IPS<\/strong> devices that are intended for direct use on mobile platforms.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/security-<span data-title=\"robotics\" data-post-id=\"5878\" class=\"sr-glossary-link\" aria-label=\"Robotics\" data-href=\"https:\/\/security-robotics.de\/en\/glossary\/robotics\">robotics<\/span>.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/ips-navigation-on-<span data-title=\"spot\" data-post-id=\"6026\" class=\"sr-glossary-link\" aria-label=\"Spot\" data-href=\"https:\/\/security-robotics.de\/en\/glossary\/spot\">spot<\/span>_ips-mini-system-by-dlr.jpg&#8221; alt=&#8221;ips navigation on <span data-title=\"spot\" data-post-id=\"6026\" class=\"sr-glossary-link\" aria-label=\"Spot\" data-href=\"https:\/\/security-robotics.de\/en\/glossary\/spot\">spot<\/span>_ips mini system by dlr&#8221; title_text=&#8221;ips navigation on <span data-title=\"spot\" data-post-id=\"6026\" class=\"sr-glossary-link\" aria-label=\"Spot\" data-href=\"https:\/\/security-robotics.de\/en\/glossary\/spot\">spot<\/span>_ips mini system by dlr&#8221; align=&#8221;center&#8221; force_fullwidth=&#8221;on&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.19.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.19.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The mobile carrier must meet certain performance parameters in terms of stability, load-bearing capacity, interfaces and mobility, requirements that are ideally fulfilled by a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/security-robotics.de\/en\/walking-robots\/\">walking robot<\/a><\/strong> like <span data-title=\"Spot\" data-post-id=\"6026\" class=\"sr-glossary-link\" aria-label=\"Spot\" data-href=\"https:\/\/security-robotics.de\/en\/glossary\/spot\">Spot<\/span>. The quadruped is designed to carry, support and safely use various <a rel=\"popover\" data-title=\"payloads\" data-post-id=\"6001\" class=\"sr-glossary-link\" aria-label=\"Payload\" href=\"https:\/\/security-robotics.de\/en\/glossary\/payload\">payloads<\/a> on its chassis. Depending on the position and weight of the additional technology, such as in this case a compact <strong>IPS<\/strong> module, the centre of gravity is redefined. In close cooperation, robots, sensors and software are coordinated and tested in practical use cases. The intended areas of application are surveys, inspections and maintenance jobs in mines, cave systems, jungles, dense forests, complex industrial plants, etc.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_gallery gallery_ids=&#8221;3526,3522,3518&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.19.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][\/et_pb_gallery][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.19.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Projects like this clearly show how broad the application possibilities of <span data-title=\"robotics\" data-post-id=\"5878\" class=\"sr-glossary-link\" aria-label=\"Robotics\" data-href=\"https:\/\/security-robotics.de\/en\/glossary\/robotics\">robotics<\/span> are and that new use cases are constantly emerging.
